The interleukin-1 system and female reproduction

Abstract: Interleukins (ILs) are known best for their involvement in the immune system and their role during inflammation. In the ovary, a growing body of evidence suggests that the ovarian follicle is a site of inflammatory reactions. Thus ovarian cells could represent sources and targets of ILs. Since then, the IL-1 system components (IL-1 , IL-1 , IL-1 receptor antagonist, IL-1 receptors) have been demonstrated to have several sites of synthesis in the ovary. These factors have been localized in the various ovarian c… Show more

“…IL10 is essential for the modulation of the immune response, and deficiencies in IL10 can lead to tissue damage (Cyktor & Turner 2011). In addition, the IL1 system is involved with both pathologic states as well as normal reproductive function (Takehara et al 1994, Van der Hoek et al 1998, Martoriati et al 2003, Gerard et al 2004). IL1RN mediates IL1, which, if overactive, can damage tissue (Gerard et al 2004).…”

“…In line with this possibility, IL-1b is known to play a role in both ovulation and oocyte maturation. 114 For instance in the mare, intrafollicular injection of IL-1b lead to increased ovulation, but also a very low rate of embryo development possibly owing an alteration of ovocyte maturation. 115 Similarly IL-1b perfusion in the rabbit ovary revealed a block in embryo development at the four-cell stage upon IL-1b stimulation.…”

“…In the rat, immunoreactive IL-1a was detected in the ovary at proestrus and estrus but not at diestrus (Nappi et al 1994). Various ovarian cell types, such as the oocyte, granulosa and theca cells, have been identified as the sites of synthesis of IL-1 (Gerard et al 2004). There is evidence for the involvement of ovarian IL-1 in the ovulation process and the regulation of ovarian steroidogenesis (Gerard et al 2004).…”

There is evidence for the involvement of ovarian IL-1 in the ovulation process and the regulation of ovarian steroidogenesis (Gerard et al 2004). These considerations raise the possibility that IL-1 in these ovarian cell types may be involved in regulation of the estrous cycle.…”
