The interference effects in the alignment and orientation of the Kr II 4p45p states following Kr I 3d9np resonance excitation

Abstract: The energy dependence of the alignment parameter A20 for the Kr II 4p45p(E 1J1) states following excitation in the Raman regime with the exciting-photon energy passing through the Kr I 3dJ̄9npj̄ resonances was investigated theoretically and experimentally. Interference between the resonance and direct photoionization channels explains the dependence of A20 on the excitation energy. Experimentally, A20 was determined after the analysis of 5p–5s fluorescence decay of the 4p45p(E 1J1) states excited with monochro… Show more

In order to illustrate the polarization analysis we take the resonant Auger process in Xe, when the 4d −1 5/2 6p J = 1 state is photoexcited at h = 65.1 eV.…”

“…Although the experimental observation of the effect is not straightforward due to the small cross section between the resonances, the appearance of such phenomena can be revealed in combination with theoretical calculations. Such an example is provided by Lagutin et al (2003a, b) and Schartner et al (2005Schartner et al ( , 2007 for alignment and orientation of the Kr II 4p 4 5p states following Kr 3d −1 5p/6p resonance excitation.…”

“…The photon-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (PIFS) has already been applied for polarization analysis of atomic fluorescence [4,23] and for studying core-excited molecules [8,18]. The present experimental setup is similar to experiments of [18,23].…”

“…Alignment and orientation of the residual ion are usually obtained from angular distribution or polarization analysis of fluorescence emitted by a subsequent relaxation of the ion [2,3,4]. On the other hand, fluorescence experiments only allow a partial wave analysis of the emitted photoelectron waves [5,6].…”
