The Interface Morphology of Thixo-Joined Dissimilar Steels

Abstract: In many circumstances, a high quality joint of dissimilar metals can be hardly achieved by conventional welding process. In this study, a new process of joining semi-solid AISI D2 tool steel and AISI 304 stainless steel using a partial remelting method is proposed. The differences of two dissimilar steels at the test temperature on microstructural developments across the interface joint area were investigated. After Thixo-Joining, Interfacial microstructures were examined by optical microscope and scanning ele… Show more

“…In diffusion welding, the temperature has shown very importantly, whether on the result of the structure or on the mechanical properties [5][6][7][8]. The outstanding properties of Ni and Al has been made it used in many applications such as for turbine airfoils [4], batteries [9][10][11], interlayers for some joining of dissimilar Ti-alloys [12,13], coating of tungsten layer [14], and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) mask absorber [15], in which in some applications joining process is obviously necessary to satisfy both shape and appearance. However, the experimental works on the investigation of the joining process are known as the very costly as stated by the American Welding Society and thus the numerical method is expected to shorten those sorts of investigations [12].…”

“…More investigations to achieve joint with high-quality globular structure were undertaken by Mohammed et al [8][9][10] in semisolid diffusion joining (SSDJ). Their research explored the possibilities of joining semisolid AISI D2 tool steel with functional elements of the same material as well as with other materials such as AISI 304 stainless steel by using a peculiar characteristic of the metals' liquid components.…”
