The Interactive Effects of Deficit Irrigation and Bacillus pumilus Inoculation on Growth and Physiology of Tomato Plant

Abstract: The effects of inoculating plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and soil water deficits on crop growth and physiology remain largely unknown. Here, the responses of leaf gas exchange, growth, and water use efficiency (WUE) of tomato plants to Bacillus pumilus (B.p.) inoculation under four irrigation strategies (I1-I4) were investigated in a greenhouse. Results showed that soil water deficits, especially at I4 (20%, v/v), significantly decreased leaf stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (Tr), an… Show more

“…Additionally, the time-lag parameter between the Tc and Ta in winter wheat calculated by the four methods all experienced a significant sudden drop under the heavy water stress treatment. Pn, Tr, and gs all exhibited a decreasing trend with diminishing soil moisture [ 47 ], and a sudden drop occurred during the severe water stress treatment (T4) [ 2 ]. This phenomenon might be related to the soil moisture quench value [ 5 ].…”

“…Also, the result is in accord with those of Sanjay and Asmita (2018) who clearly mentioned that application of Azotobacter resulted increase of shoot length and a greater number of leaves. It is quite possible that the beneficial effect of Azotobacter on tomato plants might be due partly to nitrogen fixation as nitrogen enrichment helps in vegetative growth of tomatoes (Liu et al, 2023).…”
