Available methods for solubilization and dispersion of several carbon allotropes (with the exception of dispersions in polymers) in organic solvents and water are reviewed. Main attention is paid to graphite, graphene, fullerenes, nanoonions, nanodiamonds, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanodots. The techniques to increase the "solubility" of carbon allotropes include chemical functionalization of the carbon surface (covalent and non-covalent functionalization, oxidation via ozonation, insertion of electron-withdrawing atoms (fluorination), polymer grafting, swelling and biomolecule treatments, use of molecular "wedges" for intercalation, thermal reduction, etc.). The combination of functionalization with the use of surfactants, ultrasound, laser ablation, milling, microwave expansion, hydrothermal methods, and other treatments leads to better results. The possibility of dispersion and the size of the formed particles depend on a series of factors, in particular the nature of the solvent, its viscosity and hydrogen-bond donation ability, dispersion interactions, π−π stacking between the carbon surface and reagents, and the nature of the surfactants, among others.

Our photometric–hydrodynamic method is generalized to determine the fundamental parameters of multiperiodic radially pulsating stars. We report 302 UBV(RI)C Johnson–Kron–Cousins observations of GSC 4868–0831. Using these and the published photometric data of V372 Ser, we determine the metallicity, reddening, distance, mass, radius, equilibrium luminosity and effective temperature. The results underline the necessity of using multicolour photometry, including an ultraviolet band, to classify the subgroups of RR Lyrae stars properly. Our U observations might reveal that GSC 4868–0831 is a subgiant star pulsating in two radial modes and that V372 Ser is a giant star with the size and mass of an RRd star.

We report the most comprehensive UBV(RI) C observations of the bright, radially pulsating field stars SW And, DH Peg, CU Com, DY Peg. Long term variation has been found in the ultraviolet colour curves of SW And and DH Peg. We apply our photometric-hydrodynamic method to determine the fundamental parameters of these stars: metallicity, reddening, distance, mass, radius, equilibrium luminosity and effective temperature. Our method works well for SW And, CU Com and DY Peg. A very small mass 0.26 ± 0.04 M ⊙ of SW And has been found. The fundamental parameters of CU Com are those of a normal double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) star. DY Peg has been found to have paradoxical astrophysical parameters: the metallicity, mass and period are characteristic for a high-amplitude δ Sct star while the luminosity and radius place it in the group of RR Lyrae stars. DH Peg has been found to be peculiar: the definite instability in the colour curves towards ultraviolet, the dynamical variability of the atmosphere during the shocked phases suggests that the main assumptions of our photometric-hydrodynamic method, the quasi-static atmosphere approximation (QSAA) and the exclusive excitation of radial modes are probably not satisfied in this star. The fundamental parameters of all stars studied in this series of papers are summarised in tabular and graphical form.
