“…As far as the relationship between task performance and conscientiousness is concerned, meta-analytical studies conducted in the 1990s and early 2000s found that conscientiousness is a predictor of performance across different occupations (Barrick et al, 2001;Salgado, 1997;Tett and Meyer, 2006). Recent studies also continue to show a positive association between conscientiousness and task performance (Ellershaw et al, 2016;Harris-Watson et al, 2022;Judge et al, 2013;Lin et al, 2015Lin et al, , 2020Neal et al, 2012;Schrempft et al, 2021). One possible explanation for this is that the characteristics associated with conscientiousness, such as hard working and persistence, are all likely to foster a thorough accomplishment of tasks.…”

“…Cognitive ability can also be seen as a reliable but complex contributor to workplace performance. For example, cognitive ability contributes to workplace attitudes ( Anglim et al 2019 ), and interacts variably with other individual differences, such as conscientiousness, depending on task and context ( Harris-Watson et al 2022 ). While these findings are of interest due to the insight they provide into human behaviour generally, they are also of great consequence.…”

“… Murray et al ( 2014 ) argued and demonstrated that the true association between conscientiousness and IQ may be zero or positive at the population level but that the use of selected research samples has sometimes resulted in the appearance of a negative association. More recently, Harris-Watson et al ( 2022 ) tested employee samples and found, in three of four samples, that the results supported a “nuanced compensatory mechanism”, showing that conscientiousness compensates for low to moderate GMA, but high conscientiousness may be detrimental to task performance in high-GMA individuals. Clearly, there remains much dispute over this theory.…”
