The integration of meteorological satellite imagery and numerical dynamical forecast models

Abstract: Imagery of clouds, water vapour, and thermal structure as achieved in real-time from geostationary satellites can play an important role in the dynamic verification and reinitialization of numerical weather-prediction models used for short-range prediction of intense weather. By overlaying hourly interval model forecast fields over satellite imagery, the validity of the evolving forecast can be subjectively assessed and phase and amplitude errors can be diagnosed in a dynamic manner. “…Air surface temperature (T a ) with high spatial and temporal resolution plays an important role in various applications, such as crop growth monitoring and simulations [1], hydrological, ecological, and environmental studies [2][3][4], weather forecasting [5,6], and climate change [7,8]. It is used as a key input variable and directly affects the accuracy of these applications.…”

“…To estimate near surface air temperature Ta is useful matter for many applications including the study of vector-borne disease bionomics ( [2]; [3]; [4]; [5]; [6]), epidemic forecasting [7], weather forecasting [8], veterinary uses [9], and climate change [10]. Spatial and temporal information on surface temperature, air temperature are also important to model and monitor regional evapotranspiration in the biophysical processes and crop growth modeling for food security assessment [11].…”
