The Integration of Managed Pressure Drilling MPD and Automated Well Control Technology

Abstract: Digitalisation and automation can account for massive efficiencies in wells operations. Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) and Automated Well Control are examples of "smart" technologies that can mitigate risks and costs associated with drilling wells. The Automated Well Control system was developed to monitor the well, identify an influx, take control of the rig equipment and shut in the well. MPD provides annular pressure control, real-time information of the well parameters and conditions downhole and very acc… Show more

“…It practically requires no computations, which makes it useful for use during traditional drilling. In this technique, the elimination of kick requires two circulations (B. W. Atchison & Wuest, 2021). During first circulation, kick is removed from the wellbore using the mud that is already there.…”

“…Furthermore, the AWC system has been interfaced successfully with a MPD system. This integration of both systems provides automated primary and secondary well control, which allow wells to be drilled and constructed with a very high level of efficiency and integrity [46]. The AWC system is currently designed for the drilling phase with certification to operate on either a cyber-rig or a traditional rig [42].…”
