Development diplomacy is crucial to the land-locked and least developed Nepal’s progress and prosperity. It has been more than seven decades since Nepal liberated itself from 104-year-old family autocracy and ushered in democratic rule. Ever since Nepal was admitted to the United Nations in 1955, land-locked Nepal has been categorized as one of the least developed among developing countries (LDCs). Hopefully, Nepal will graduate from LDC status by 2026. The country, faced with numerous development challenges, is effortful in overcoming them through internal policies and programs as well as international cooperation for development. Development diplomacy received priority attention following the restoration of parliamentary democracy in 1990. While the country’s land-locked ness, a geographical disadvantage, cannot be wished away, several task forces set up to recommend measures for the effective and efficient conduct of development diplomacy have identified trade, investment, tourism, foreign employment, and water resource development as major components of such diplomacy. The paper emphasizes the need for Nepal’s diplomatic missions abroad to be actively involved in promoting the country’s economic interests and facilitating all-round development through coordination and regular communication with the government’s line ministries including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), National Planning Commission, and the private sector.

Monolepta signata, Monolepta hieroglyphica, and Monolepta quadriguttata are highly destructive agricultural pests in East and Southeast Asia, causing considerable economic losses by damaging a variety of crops in China, including soybeans, corn, cotton, rice, and vegetables. Despite numerous studies to prevent and control their spread, these pests continue to pose a severe agricultural issue demanding attention. This review focuses on the latest research concerning the biology, hosts, and prevention of these beetles. We also explore the biotic and abiotic factors influencing the population dynamics of these pests. While insecticides are commonly employed to manage these beetles, options for suppressing adult beetles and grubs are limited. Despite ongoing regulatory efforts, these beetles remain a significant threat to several crops, including cotton and corn. Researching the pests’ interactions with predators, parasitoids, and host plants in their ecosystem can provide valuable insights into their ecological roles and potential control methods.

Yield Loss and Economic Threshold Level of Soybean due to Leaf Roller (<i>Apoderus cyaneus</i> Hope) in Nepal

Yield loss in soybean due to leaf roller (Apoderus cyaneus Hope) was studied at Khumaltar during 1985 and 1986 seasons. Field experiments were conducted during vegetative as well as reproductive stages of soybean. Rolled leaves of soybean with eggs, grubs and pupae were collected from the field and reared in the laboratory for adults. Adults were introduced into nylon cages installed at the central rows of each plot just after germination of soybean. Insects were maintained at population density of 25, 50 and 100 per m 2 . At maximum (100) adult density, the potential grain yield loss of cultivar, Ransom soybean in its vegetative and reproductive stages were 103 and 48 mg per day respectively from each adult of A. cyaneus. Percentages of yield losses were 36.2, 45.2, and 58.0 during vegetative and 37.5, 48.5 and 66.0 during reproductive stages from the insect population of 25, 50 and 100, respectively which, was not in accordance with the level of two and four fold increased population density of insect. Yield reduction was higher (260 and 108 mg per day) from each adult beetle at lower population level (25) in both vegetative and reproductive stages of soybean.
