This study used a spatial approach to explore metropolitan and nonmetropolitan variation of college enrollment at the interplay of place and race within the state of Texas. Analyzing Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS-USA) data and using population proportions as well as regression methods, we pay particular attention to the racial/ethnic diversity in non-metro areas and its relationship with college enrollment. We find geography is a factor in the college enrollment racial/ethnic gaps in nonmetropolitan areas of Texas, but considerable regional disparities exist. These disparities show diverse trends based on residential location. This indicates a need for more research to explore geographic differences in postsecondary opportunities and college access practices and policies with the racial/ethnic diversity of place in mind.

This essay explores the role of feral pigs in assembling the Texas frontier. Quick to reproduce, highly adaptive, and destroyers of agricultural fields, feral pigs have emerged over the past decade as one of the principal challenges facing agriculture and land management systems in Texas. Yet, more than simply a pest, feral pigs have and continue to be active agents in forging new landscapes, ecologies, and settler‐colonial relations. We trace the history of the present pig “crisis” by exploring three paradigms for thinking pigs and the politics of ferality on the Texas frontier. These paradigms frame pigs as: “settler beasts” (companion species to settler expansion); “melting‐pot beasts” (feral pigs as representing diverse genetic remnants of settler expansion); and “invader beasts” (feral pigs framed as a threat). Our argument is that these paradigms index diverse material and discursive ways that feral pigs have and continue to assemble Texas's frontier landscape.

In this chapter, we use the term "migrant" to reflect the reality that many people arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border fit neither into the category of immigrant (i.e., implying economic need) nor into the category of refugee (i.e., referring to a status that confers protections based on harms experienced in the country of origin). Refugee status reflects state acknowledgment of experiences of harm or persecution, rather than the reality of these experiences themselves. However, we use the term "immigration" in referring to U.S. policies and laws.
