The inhibitory effects of a new cobalt-based polyoxometalate on the growth of human cancer cells

Abstract: A new cobalt-based polyoxometalate, (Himi)2[Bi(2)W2(0)O(66)(OH)(4)Co2(H2O)(6)Na(4) (H2O)14] · 17H2O (imi = iminazole) (BWCN) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The inhibitory activities against selected human cancer lines were also determined in this study. The cell viability and chemoresistance of BWCN on human colon carcinoma HT-29 cells were assessed by MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazoliumbromide), cell morphology changes, a comet assay and western blot analysis. “…This study describes, for the first time, that POTs can affect aquaporin function and lead to the inhibition of cancer cell migration. POMs are potential candidates for anticancer drugs in the future since several types of POMs showed anticancer activities at various concentrations ranging from nM to µM [3,9,13,[37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44]. In fact, in most cases, when compared with already approved anticancer drugs, POMs were more efficient.…”

“…Polyoxometalates (POMs), as a typical class of metal–oxygen anionic clusters,1 have been found to possess activity in many biological systems such as antibacterial, antivirus, anticancer, and so forth 2. Recently, POMs have been recognized to possess the capacity to induce cell apoptosis3 and inhibit the aggregation of amyloid peptides 4. Thus, clarification for the interaction of POMs with biomolecules is critical for understanding their biofunctions.…”

“…[7][8][9][10] Chiral recognition/ resolution is of great interest and ever-increasing importance, thus large efforts have been made towards techniques suitable for this aim such as chromatography, [11][12][13][14] enzyme resolution, 15 membrane separation, [16][17][18] and chemical recognition. 19 In this regard, the applications of chiral materials/chiral selectors in the enantioseparations based on the formation of different diastereomeric adducts, were studied, [20][21][22][23][24] and the interactions such as hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic/hydrophilic, p-p, dipole-dipole, and ionic were reported in the adduct formation. [25][26][27][28] Since their discovery, silica-based materials have emerged as a source of immense potential for applications like for example in selective adsorption, separation, catalysis, and preparation of novel functional materials.…”
