The Inhibition of Serine/Threonine Protein Phosphatase Type 5 Mediates Cantharidin Toxicity to Control Periplaneta americana (L.)

Abstract: The American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.), is a notorious urban pest. It has developed insecticidal resistance to commonly used insecticides. Cantharidin (CTD) is a defensive toxin derived from blister beetles. It has been verified to have insecticidal toxicity in a range of pests. In this study, we determined the ingestion toxicity of CTD and norcantharidin (NCTD) to P. americana to test whether they had the potential to be effective against P. americana. Bioassays revealed that CTD produces toxicity… Show more

“…Protein-serine/threonine kinases participate in signal transduction cascades regulating several cellular processes including apoptosis, and cancerous processes ( Roskoski 2010 ). In the cockroach Periplaneta americana , inhibition of serine/threonine phosphatase by cantharidin leads to toxicity and can be used for cockroach control ( Sun et al, 2020 ). While phosphatase removes a phosphate group from a protein, kinases attach a phosphate group ( Cheng et al, 2011 ).…”

“…Periplaneta americana, Blattodea: Blattidae, commonly known as the cockroach, is a worldwide health pest. 8 After decades of studies, Periplaneta americana has been developed into a series of new drugs about liver diseases, cancers, and skin trauma. Recently, Periplaneta americana has been found to have outstanding anti-aging effects.…”
