The inhibition effect mechanisms of four scale inhibitors on the formation and crystal growth of CaCO3 in solution

Abstract: The experimentation, molecular dynamics simulation and DFT calculation were used to study the inhibition effects of four scale inhibitors, including polyacrylic acid (PAA), hydrolyzed polymaleic anhydride (HPMA), polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) and polyaspartic acid (PASP), on formation and crystal growth of CaCO3 in solutions. According to concentrations of Ca2+ in solutions, the sequence of inhibition effects of scale inhibitors on formation of CaCO3 in the solution was PESA > PASP > HPMA > PAA. Chara… Show more

“…Chemical dosing is one of the most traditional and effective methods for the treatment of circulating cooling water. However, water eutrophication caused by the discharge of wastewater containing phosphorus and nitrogen has increased the strictness of wastewater discharge restrictions. To protect water resources and meet sustainable development requirements, higher demands have been put forward to produce more green water treatment agents. As such, the development of environmentally friendly water treatment agents and technologies has become the focus of many scientific studies at both home and abroad.…”

“…The most effective and famous additives are poly(acrylic acid), poly(methacrylic acid), and poly(Maleic acid) which are widely used as scale inhibitors in thermal plants [262][263][264] for reducing scale formation and increasing process performance. Another kind of polymeric additives for water desalination using membrane processes is polyamino polyether methylenephosphonate (PAPEMP), which is an ideal additive as it controls calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate scale formation and deposition [265,266]. Addition of this chemical could reduce or eliminate acid feed, therefore reducing hazardous risk and increasing water production.…”

“…The structures and properties of the three inhibitors (PASP, NTMP, and DETPMP) are shown in Figure and Table , respectively. The compounds selected for studying the inhibition effect of barite scale are conventional inhibitors that are widely used for barite scale inhibition investigations. ,, Three different commercial inhibitors were selected for the simulation study to evaluate and compare their performance. Table shows the main properties of the inhibitors used in this study.…”
