The Influential Factors of Adherence to Physical Activity and Exercise among Community‐Dwelling Stroke Survivors: A Path Analysis

Abstract: Aims and objectives:To investigate the status of physical activity and exercise (PAE) adherence and identify its influential factors among community-dwelling stroke survivors. Background: Regular PAE after stroke is essential for recovery and secondary prevention, while adherence to PAE and its influential factors are rarely studied. Design:A cross-sectional descriptive study. Methods:In total, 208 stroke survivors (70.25 ± 9.08 years) were randomly selected from three communities. The influential factors of PA… Show more

“…Bandura (2003) suggested that the realization of an individual's potential depends to some extent on whether their actual level of knowledge is well coordinated with self‐efficacy. In addition, we found that physical activity self‐efficacy significantly mediated between knowledge and physical activity during the first and third trimesters, which is consistent with previous studies (Y. J. Lee et al, 2016; Lin et al, 2022). Thus, strategies are needed to incorporate self‐efficacy in the design of health education programs to promote pregnant women's physical activity.…”

“…Consistent with a similar study conducted in urban areas, 32 this study found that most of the stroke patients in rural areas showed low or moderate levels of adherence, not only the younger patients but also the elderly stroke patients. More than half of the young-middle aged (55.73%) and older patients (55.98%) showed a moderate level of adherence, what is more, only 17.80% of the participants’ adherence in this survey were at a high level (18.58% of the younger patients and 16.91% of the old patients), it was slightly lower than the adherence of urban stroke patients (20.19% at a high level).…”

“…Seven experts were consulted, and twenty patients were reviewed to improve clarity and rigor. 30 The PAEAS has been previously tested 30 and used 31 , 32 among Chinese stroke patients in urban areas to determine their adherence to the recommended physical activity and exercise regimen. It contains 14 items organized into the following three sections: adherence to PAE participation (PAEP) with 8 items; adherence to PAE monitoring (PAEM) with 3 items; and adherence to PAE advice-seeking (PAEA) with 3 items.…”

“…Those events that occur before the concept’s occurrence include patient-related antecedents, therapy-related antecedents, and environment-related antecedents. Patients’ related antecedent includes individuals’ capacity of mobility ( 11 , 12 , 14 , 29 ), self-efficacy ( 9 , 13 15 ), outcome expectancy ( 15 ), cognitive and emotional status ( 11 , 13 , 32 ), education ( 9 , 12 ), beliefs in the benefits of exercise ( 13 , 29 ), motivation ( 11 , 21 , 30 ), perception of meaningfulness ( 26 , 29 ), pain ( 9 ), fatigue ( 13 ), personality traits ( 14 ), adaption ( 13 , 26 ), and previous experience and habit ( 12 ). Therapy-related antecedents include therapeutic relationships with therapists ( 13 , 26 , 27 ), diversity and individualized exercise program ( 13 , 26 , 30 , 33 ), and trust in rehabilitation providers ( 13 , 26 , 27 ).…”
