The Influence of XC-Polymer on Drilling Fluid Filter Cake Properties and Formation Damage

Abstract: The filter cake characterization is very essential for doing well selection of the drilling fluids that eliminates the drilling problems such as formation damage. A correct knowledge of filter cake properties gives petroleum engineers a tool for efficiently managing hydrocarbon production process of a field. This study aimed to experimentally investigate the effect of different concentration of XC-Polymer on filter cake properties, filtrate loss and formation damage to select the optimum concentration of the X… Show more

“…This reduction in rock productivity is termed formation damage. Damage ratio is the property after damage divided by the original undamaged property (Blkoor and Fattah 2013). For oil permeability, the damage ratio may range from 0.3 to 1.0 depending on the type of the mud filter loss and type of core material.…”

“…Fluid retention is of paramount importance to a drilling operation as the water in WDFs can penetrate into the formation, which results in significant clay swelling, damage to the formation, and eventual wellbore collapse. 66 Additionally, the solids in WDFs that under high pressure form a layer on the formation called the "filter cake" must not give rise to differential pressure sticking. Therefore, a low fluid loss volume and the formation of thin, low-permeability filter cakes are desirable for high- performance WDFs.…”
