The influence of water content in a proton-conducting ionic liquid on the double layer properties of the Pt/PIL interface

Abstract: The influence of the water content of 2-sulfoethylmethylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate [2-Sema][TfO] on the double layer properties of the interface of platinum and the proton conducting ionic liquid (PIL) is investigated by means of impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. By fitting the impedance spectra as complex capacitances, up to four differential double layer capacitances and corresponding time constants are obtained, depending on the potential (U = 0-1.6 V/RHE), water content (0.7-6.1 wt%) a… Show more

“…Furthermore, the addition of water decreases the density of both ILs. These results are comparable with other bibliographic references [5][6][7]. In the case of speed of sound ( Figure 2), similar behaviors have been observed; that is, a decrease of this parameter with the temperature for all of the studied fluids, which is in good agreement with other previous works [1] Using Equation 2, the thermal expansion coefficient has been calculated and represented in and also decreases linearly with temperature.…”

“…[2-Sema][TfO] was prepared by slowly adding trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (reagent grade, 98%, Sigma Aldrich) to 2-methylaminoethansulfonic acid (N-methyltaurine, 99%, Sigma Life Science). A more detailed description of the preparation process can be found elsewhere [9]. Coulometric Karl-Fischer titration (852 Titrando/Metrohm company) yielded a water concentration of 0.6 wt.%.…”
