A review of the literature showed that spider abundance was increased by diversification in 63% of studies. A comparison of diversification modes showed that spider abundance in the crop was increased in 33% of studies by 'aggregated diversification' (e.g. intercropping and non-crop strips) and in 80% of studies by 'interspersed diversification' (e.g., undersowing, partial weediness, mulching and reduced tillage). It is suggested that spiders tend to remain in diversified patches and that extending the diversification throughout the whole crop (as in interspersed diversification) offers the best prospects for improving pest control. There is little evidence that spiders walk in significant numbers into fields from uncultivated field edges, but diversification at the landscape level serves to foster large multi-species regional populations of spiders which are valuable as a source of aerial immigrants into newly planted crops. There are very few manipulative field studies where the impact of spiders on pests has been measured in diversified crops compared with undiversified controls. It is encouraging, however, that in those few studies an increased spider density resulted in improved pest control. Future work needs are identified.

RESUMO -Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos da mistura dos herbicidas fomesafen + fluazifop sobre a comunidade de artrópodes do solo cultivado com feijão nos sistemas plantio direto e convencional. O experimento foi realizado em Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico de boa fertilidade, em Coimbra, MG. Duas semanas após o plantio foi aplicada a mistura comercial dos herbicidas fluazifop + fomesafen, denominada Robust ; em cada sistema de cultivo foi mantida uma testemunha sem aplicação de herbicida. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, com cinco repetições. As populações de artrópodes do solo foram amostradas aos 1, 8, 21 e 42 dias após a aplicação do herbicida. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variáveis canônicas (CVA), que é uma técnica de ordenação indireta que reduz a dimensionalidade do conjunto dos dados originais em um conjunto de variáveis que podem ser usadas para ilustrar graficamente as posições relativas e as orientações das médias das respostas da comunidade em cada tratamento sob comparação. As diferenças entre os tratamen tos na abun dância dos artrópodes selecionados foram determinadas pela análise de variância por medida repetida, considerando a data de amostragem como a medida repetida. A análise das variáveis canônicas CVA para os sistemas de plantio e aplicação de herbicida indicou diferenças na densidade de artrópodes coletados nos diferentes tratamentos estudados, considerando a composição e a abundância das espécies. Foram observadas, por meio do diagrama de ordenação, diferenças no conjunto de artrópodes do solo coletados nos dois sistemas de plantio. A aplicação dos herbicidas afetou a densidade dos artrópodes associados ao feijoeiro em ambos os sistemas de cultivo, com exceção do Solenopsis sp. Impacts of the agricultural transformation of the Canadian Prairies on grassland arthropods

The prairie grasslands have been transformed to become the primary source of agricultural production in Canada. Soon after its establishment, the Biological Survey of Canada recognised the urgent need to document the arthropods of the prairie grasslands, especially in the few pristine remnants. Although this initiative has yielded considerable progress in documenting the species present in the Prairies Ecozone, comprehensive ecological studies are sparse. Landscape effects on arthropods are well studied elsewhere, but no equivalent studies have been published for the Canadian Prairies. Crop rotation varies landscape composition annually, changes host plant resources in fields, and interacts with other agricultural inputs to disturb pest and beneficial arthropods. Despite only a handful of studies on grazing, there is an emerging pattern: moderate grazing increases arthropod diversity and benefits certain arthropod guilds. Abiotic inputs elicit variable responses from different arthropod taxa; Carabidae (Coleoptera) are best studied, with some information available for ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and aquatic arthropods. Biotic inputs include arthropods released for biocontrol of weed and insect pests; evidence indicates that biocontrol agents of insects have a greater potential for impact on native communities of arthropods. The studies reviewed here reveal important trends and research gaps to be addressed in the future.
