The influence of the quantity and quality of sediment organic matter on the potential mobility and toxicity of trace elements in bottom sediment

Abstract: Knowledge on the fraction of trace elements in the bottom sediments is a key to understand their mobility and ecotoxicological impact. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of the content of organic matter fractions on the mobility and ecotoxicity of trace elements in sediments from the Rybnik reservoir. The most refractory fraction of organic matter—Cnh (non-hydrolysing carbon)—dominated in the sediments. The content of organic matter fractions are arranged in the following order: Cnh (non-hyd… Show more

“…Preliminary analysis of the soil used in the experiment revealed the presence of Cd ions at a concentration of 0.43 mg Cd kg -1 DM of soil. The Cd content in the soil was determined according to Baran et al [36]. Based on data published by Tóth et al [37], a dose of 3 mg Cd kg −1 DM was used in the experiment as average soil pollution with Cd ions, while a dose of 5 mg Cd kg −1 DM of soil corresponded to the maximum Cd content determined in Europe.…”

“…The region in which the reservoir is located is highly industrialised, with mining (hard coal), metallurgical (steel and colour metal mills), construction, transport and chemical industries. Moreover, the Rybnik Reservoir plays an important technological role, as heated waters from the "Rybnik" Power Plant are discharged and sourced from the reservoir (Kostecki et al 2017;Baran et al 2019). The predominant subcatchment, in the southern part of the drainage area, consists of urbanised areas or areas characterised by scattered rural development, as well as agricultural areas.…”

“…Thirtythree samples were taken (30 in the main area and three in the side bays) with an Ekman grab at a sediment depth of 0-15 cm during a research session in July/ August 2017 ( Fig. 1) (Baran et al 2019). The sediment samples were freeze dried and sieved through a 2-mm mesh for analysis of PCDD/F concentration (Urbaniak et al 2014).…”
