The Influence of the Preparation Method on the Characteristics of a New Cosmetic Gel Based on Hyaluronic Acid and Matrix-Forming Polymers

Abstract: Because hyaluronic acid (HA) cosmetic gels are the most commonly used gels in the cosmetic industry, the purpose of this study was to develop a new gel formulation of HA in carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (Carmellose, CMC Na), prepared in three different ways and to characterize the gel obtained in terms of texture, pH, thixotropy and decide which preparation method is optimal for obtaining a cosmetic gel. The gel formulations were prepared by dispersing CMC Na in water and glycerol and mixing it in th… Show more

“…Moreover, it is used in semisolid dairy products depending on their viscosity (low or high) to control the viscoelastic properties [ 66 ]. Due to control of the thixotropy and pseudoplastic behavior of cosmetics, CMC has been used with hyaluronic acid to develop a gel for application in cosmetics as CMC creates a better viscosity and texture profile in the gel [ 127 ].…”

“…The 3D matrix provides a controlled release system for bioactive ingredients in derma and prevents skin disease. Based on a similar application, the CMC/hyaluronic acid-based gel or matrix was also formulated by Birsan et al (2020) [127]. Tang et al (2021) [356] proposed a polydopamine/CMC/polyacrylic acid-based UV protective bioactive hydrogel for skin care earlier this year.…”

“…Hydrogels with different composition, size, shape, and morphology can be prepared by controlled polymerization [9]. The gel formulation characterization methods include physical characterization (pH, rheology, appearance, swelling behavior, and texture) and chemical characterization (biological tests, microbial and sensory assessment) [8,10]. Gel matrices rapidly transform into liquid consistency on contact with the skin surface, dry quickly, and form a film that leaves no stains or greasy texture.…”
