Objectives To better guide clinicians to choose the appropriate chairside system, we compared and evaluated the morphology of crowns generated by three different biogeneric design modes (biogeneric copy (BC), biogeneric individual (BI), and biogeneric reference (BR)) of the CEREC software. Methods Maxillary and mandibular casts were obtained from twelve volunteers and digital impressions were acquired. All ceramic crown preparations of all right maxillary central incisors were prepared and digital impressions were taken. Then, crowns were automatically designed under BC, BI and BR modes separately and their morphologies were evaluated by six doctors. The "optimal fitting alignment" and "3D analysis" functions of the Geomagic Qualify software were carried out between original teeth and auto-generated full crowns. The auto-generated crowns were modified by a technician according to clinical criteria and the adjustment time was recorded. The discrepancies between technician modified crowns and the auto-generated full crowns were evaluated with the same functions in the Geomagic Qualify software. Results The subjective evaluation results of BC group were significantly better than those of BI and BR group (p < 0.05). Compared with the original teeth and modified crowns, auto-generated crowns in BC group all had the smallest differences, followed by BR and BI group (p < 0.05). BC group needed the shortest adjustment time than BI and BR group (p < 0.05).

The present study aimed to assess the eighteen month follow-up patient-centered outcomes of a simple and predictable protocol for 3D-printed functional complete dentures manufactured using an improved poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)–nanoTiO2. A detailed morphological and structural characterization of the PMMA–TiO2 nanocomposite, using SEM, EDX, XRD, and AFM, after 3D-printing procedure and post-wearing micro-CT, was also performed. Methods: A total of 35 fully edentulous patients were enrolled in this prospective study. A 0.4% TiO2-nanoparticle-reinforced PMMA composite with improved mechanical strength, morphologically and structurally characterized, was used according to an additive computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) protocol for complete denture fabrication. The protocol proposed involved a three-step appointment process. Before denture insertion, 1 week, 12 month, and 18-month follow up patients were evaluated via the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS, 0–10) and Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients (OHIP-EDENT), with a higher score meaning poor quality of life. Results: A total of 45 complete denture sets were inserted. OHIP-EDENT scored significantly better after 18 months of denture wearing, 20.43 (±4.42) compared to 52.57 (±8.16) before treatment; mean VAS was improved for all parameters assessed. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, we can state that the proposed workflow with the improved material used is a viable treatment option for patients diagnosed with complete edentulism.

The aim of this present study was to investigate the reproducibility of surface profile and step height in the dental scanners.A step height specimen (Step Master SERIES516-499), which has 300, 100, 50, and 20 μm height of 4 steps, constructed with 5 ceramic gauge-blocks (G1-G5). The specimen was scanned with 2 laboratory (D900 and Ceramill map400) and 2 intra-oral scanners (Trios3 and CS3600), each 10 times. To evaluate the reproducibility of surface profile, the scanned data within the region of interest (ROI) on G1 was used, and the parallelism tolerance of the target surface was investigated. To evaluate the reproducibility of step height difference, the cumulative step values with respect to a reference plane that best fitting to the mesh data on G1 were calculated.The parallelism tolerances of target surface in the laboratory and intra-oral scanners were approximately 10 and 20 μm, respectively. It of the CS3600 was significantly lower than those of other 3 scanners. In the laboratory scanners, all step height could be measured. On the other hand, it was difficult to detect under the step height of 50 μm with the Torios3, and under 100 μm with the CS3600.Within the limitations of this study, in the scanning processes and 3D-construction, the error in the laboratory scanners was significantly less than intra-oral scanners. The results of this study could provide an insight into the appropriate clinical requirement for each CAD/CAM system.
