The influence of structural modification and composition of glycidyl carbamate resins on their viscosity and coating performance

Abstract: The synthesis, characterization, and coatings performance of a series of glycidyl carbamate (GC) resins synthesized from a hexamethylene diisocyanate biuret resin, glycidol, and alcohols were explored. The partial replacement of glycidol with alcohols was explored as a way to reduce the viscosity of multifunctional GC resins. Six modified GC resins were obtained by replacing one-third of the glycidol with alcohols and ether alcohols. The modified GC resins were characterized using FTIR and 13 C NMR. The alcoho… Show more

“…9). 59 As expected, the viscosity of the resins was significantly reduced while the amine-cured and self-cured coatings still had good hardness, solvent resistance and adhesion. As expected, the flexibility improved due to a reduction in the crosslink density of the coatings; however, coating hardness, while lower, was still sufficient for many applications.…”

“…10.0cm 3 of each liquid paint was applied onto the glass sheet placed at 180 0 on a laboratory bench (for uniform thickness). The use of glass panels was to obtain free films for determination of mechanical properties [6] and smooth onsubstrate application for determination of gloss. The paint was allowed to dry at room temperature.…”

“…GC coatings have been introduced as isocyanate-free systems that retain the desired properties of polyurethanes. [42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50] Isocyanates are often flagged for their effects on workers' health, however it is challenging to disregard their desired properties that comes from the urethane linkages, 44,51 thus glycidyl carbamate (GC) coatings were introduced to deliver both urethane linkage and epoxy chemistry for crosslinking. 44,45,48 The glycidyl carbamate functional group consists of an epoxy group positioned adjacent to a urethane (carbamate).…”
