The influence of storage time and pH variation on water sorption by different composite resins

Abstract: The water sorption of composite resins is dependent upon their storage time. The pH cycling created a significant impact on resins G1, G5, and G7. The sorption and solubility of composite resins vary according to their chemical composition.

“…Water sorption is realized by two means: adsorption and absorption. Adsorption is the attachment of molecules of a liquid or gas on the resin surface and absorption happens by penetration of liquid or gas within the mass of the composite resins [ 43 ]. Water sorption and hygroscopic expansion are among the physical properties of the composites.…”

“…The oral environment can interfere with the water sorption of composite resins, due to its pH variation, either through acidic foods or organic acids (lactic and acetic acid) [ 43 ] or, in case of patients suffering from GERD, through the regurgitation of gastric juices into the oral cavity [ 46 ].…”

“…PICN has UDMA and TEGDMA monomers in their composition. Great water sorption has been reported in composites containing high TEGDMA content compared to other methacrylate monomers 23 . This is explained by the hydrophilicity of TEGDMA.…”
