The influence of sport club participation on physical activity, fitness and body fat during childhood and adolescence: The LOOK Longitudinal Study

Abstract: Sport participants were more active, fitter and had less body fat (girls only) than non-sports participants. However, the associated benefits of sport with PA diminished during adolescence and the majority of sports participants did not meet recommended levels of PA. Strategies aiming to maximise the benefits of sports participation may be enhanced by providing special attention to the early adolescent period particularly among girls.

“…For example, girls are known to participate in less structured sport compared to boys (Hebert et al, 2015). This discrepancy is likely to have contributed to the observed differences in cardiorespiratory fitness between boys and girls in this study given that organised sport participation is linked with higher levels of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness in children (Marques, Ekelund and Sardinha, 2016;Telford et al, 2016b).…”

“…Although sports practice during leisure time was analyzed in the present study, this type of activity is usually performed at high intensities and results in positive cardiovascular and muscle adaptations. 25 Associations between sports practice and cardiorespiratory fitness, 13,16 muscle strength 15 and protection against overweight and obesity have been described. 17 Because young people who practice sports are more active, 13,14 In the present study, the outcomes were analyzed separately and in combinations.…”

“…From a public health point of view, this is an important result, given that sports make a large contribution towards total physical activity. 13,14 Students who do not practice sports may perform less daily physical activity and be exposed to the risks of future non-communicable diseases.…”
