RESUMO -(Relação entre solo, vegetação e topografia em área de cerrado (Parque Estadual de Vassununga, SP): como se expressa em mapeamentos ?). Foram investigadas as relações entre mapas de fitofisionomias, solos e topografia, na Gleba Pé-de-Gigante (21º37'30''S; 47º37'30''W, SP). A área estudada constitui a planície de inundação do córrego Paulicéia e colinas no entorno, onde predominam fisionomias de cerrado, havendo também manchas de floresta estacional, floresta ripária e campo úmido, sobre solos predominantemente arenosos. As cartas temáticas analisadas compreenderam: a) mapa pré-existente de fisionomias de vegetação, b) mapa hipsométrico, baseado em curvas de nível de 5 em 5 m e c) mapa de solos, feito a partir de dados químicos e físicos do solo (amostras coletadas em 54 pontos, nas profundidades: 0-5, 5-25, 40-60 e 80-100 cm) e fotografias aéreas (1988, 1:40.000). Os mapas foram re-classificados, para se obter diferentes níveis de detalhamento, e cruzados, em sistema de informação geográfica. Nas tabelas de contingência, geradas a partir dos cruzamentos, foi aplicado o teste de Qui-quadrado e obtido o valor de correlação de Cramér, para investigar a relação entre os mapeamentos. A floresta estacional semidecídua se mostrou fortemente associada à classe geral de Latossolos, e o campo cerrado às altitudes de 620-650 m, provavelmente associado à dinâmica sub-superficial da água. O detalhamento da informação mapeada nos temas analisados não garantiu melhores resultados à interpretação de suas relações, pois as classes fitofisionômicas não respondem diretamente, nem isoladamente, à topografia ou à classificação usual dos solos.Palavras-chave: cerrado, fitofisionomia, classificação de solos, topografia, mapeamento, correlação espécie-ambiente ABSTRACT -(The relationship among soil, vegetation and topography in a cerrado area (Vassununga State Park, SP): how well is it expressed in maps ?). Relationships among vegetation, soil and topography maps were investigated in the Pé-de-Gigante Reserve (21º37'30''S; 47º37'30''W, SP). The studied area is the Paulicéia river basin, where soils are predominantly sandy and the vegetation includes a gradient of savanna physiognomies and patches of semideciduous forest, wet fields, and riparian forest. The cartographic material included: a) pre-existent vegetation map, b) topographic map based on 5 m contour curves, and c) a soil map based on chemical and physical soil features (soil samples collected at 54 sites at 0-5, 5-25, 40-60 e 80-100 cm depths) and aerial photographs (1988, 1:40.000). These maps were reclassified to generate secondary maps at different levels of detail, and overlayed through a geographic information system. Contingency tables were generated, and chi-squared values and Cramér correlation coefficients were obtained to investigate the relationships between the maps. Pattern analysis was used to investigate the habitat preferences of five small mammal species in tropicalopen-forest ofthe Northern Territory. Eifty-one sites were classified byfaunal abundance arui the groups examined for significant differences in vegetation structural attributes arui plant species in both dry and wet seasons.The omnivore Isoodon macrourus showed strong association with fioristic and vegetation structural attributes only in the dry season, when areas with a dense understorey of small trees arui shrubs arui a high percentage of leaf litter cover were favoured. Of the two primarily carnivorous species, Antechinus bellus was related strongly with fioristic arui structural attributes in both seasons arui showed a consistent preference for areas with relatively dense low-level foliage (< 2m). By contrast, Dasyurus hallucatus was associated more with the structurally simple open-forest types. Of the two mainly herbivorous species Mesembdomys gouldii showed associations only withfioristics in both seasons, while the habitat relationships o/Tdchosurus amhemensis were very weak due to its low abundance in the study area.The number and strength of animal/habitat relationships were greatest in the dry season. Eorest types with dense mid-level foliage arui abundant hollow logs and leaf litter had the greatest mammal richness and abundance; these areas may be critical to the survival of local mammal populations.A comparison of site-groups, defined indeperuiently on the basis of fauna, fioristics or structure, showed that animal groups overlapped one to six ofthe habitat groups. The animal's perception of 'habitat' may thus differfiom that of humans, or that defined by measurement of habitat attributes.

Holocene Amazon rainforest-savanna dynamics and climatic implications: high-resolution pollen record from Laguna Loma Linda in eastern Colombia

We present a high-resolution pollen record of a 695-cm-long sediment core from Laguna Loma Linda, located at an altitude of 310 m in the transitional zone between the savannas of the Llanos Orientales and the Amazonian rainforest, about 100 km from the Eastern Cordillera. Based on eight AMS 14 C ages, the record represents the last 8700 14 C yr BP. During the period from 8700 to 6000 14 C yr BP the vegetation was dominated by grass savanna with only a few woody taxa, such as Curatella and Byrsonima, present in low abundance. Gallery forest along the drainage system apparently was poorly developed. Compared with today, precipitation must have been significantly lower and seasonality stronger. During the period from 6000 to 3600 14 C yr BP, rainforest taxa increased markedly, reflecting an increase in precipitation. Rainforest and gallery forest taxa such as Moraceae/Urticaceae, Melastomataceae, Alchornea, Cecropia and Acalypha, were abundant, whereas Poaceae were reduced in frequency. From 3600 to 2300 14 C yr BP rainforest taxa continued to increase; Moraceae/Urticaceae became very frequent, and Myrtaceae and Myrsine became common. Savanna vegetation decreased continuously. We infer that precipitation was still increasing, and that the length of the annual dry period possibly shortened. From 2300 14 C yr BP onwards, grass savanna (mainly represented by Poaceae) expanded and Mauritia palms became frequent. This reflects increased human impact on the vegetation.
