The influence of sodium chloride replacement with potassium chloride as a curing agent on the quality of tanned pufferfish (Arothon reticularis) skin

Abstract: The pufferfish skin is a by-product that is underutilized. Skin tanning is the prospect way to enhance the economic value of pufferfish skin. The tanning process is a long one, including the process of curing the skin. Sodium chloride is commonly used for curing the skin. However, sodium chloride can increase the total dissolved solids (TDS) that will be problematic in the environment. Potassium chloride can be used instead of sodium chloride. This study aims to determine the influence of substituting sodium c… Show more

“…The presence of distinct peaks ranges at 3309.90cm -1 (Ca), 3308.90 cm -1 (Al), 3301.56 cm -1 (Fd), 3300.85 cm -1 (Cr), and 3301 cm -1 (Ct). This implies that the N-H linkages to amino acid groups are present in this region which is in congruence with other studies (Rachmawati et al, 2020;Wibowo et al, 2018). The strong band within the range of 3200-3500 cm -1 indicates the presence of hydroxyl groups, particularly those with a high concentration of carboxyl groups (Qiang et al, 2016).…”

“…Currently, fish tanning has developed due to limited leather materials commonly used, namely cowhide and other mammalian skins. Pufferfish skin can be used for tanning [8]. The result of tanning puffer fish is relatively stiffer since the tanning of puffer fish skin mostly uses vegetable tanners with rigid skin results.…”
