The influence of shell parameters on phonons in core–shell nanoparticles: a resonant Raman study

Abstract: The effect of shells of various thicknesses on the vibrational resonant Raman spectra of CdSe/ZnS core-shell nanoparticles is studied. The dependence of the core-shell structure on the method of shell deposition is derived from a comparison of the vibrational and photoluminescence spectra of nanoparticles. Along with the appearance of peaks attributed to the shell, the phonon spectrum of the core undergoes significant changes upon shell growth. The change of the CdSe LO peak lineshape in core-shell nanoparticl… Show more

“…This should also be valid for nanorods. The shift of the LO frequency due to a decreased phonon confinement because of its (partial) propagation into the shell is not likely because the LO phonon dispersion curves of bulk CdSe and ZnS are not overlapping, and the ZnS shell is thus not expected to support the CdSe-like LO vibrations [96]. The shift of the LO frequency can explained by compressive strain.…”

“…It could be attributed to the ZnS transverse optical phonon [28]. Otherwise, the ZnS shell deposition could be accompanied by core-shell material interdiffusion and the formation of an intermixed interface layer, manifesting itself in the Raman spectra as a peak at 280 − 290 cm −1 [96]. Dzhagan et al investigated the influence of different shell parameters on phonons in spherical CdSe core-shell nanoparticles.…”

“…Furthermore, the analysis of the literature shows that the relative intensity of the SO mode can be very close for different NC morphologies and dimensions (dots, rods, tetrapods, and wires) with various S/V . The nonsystematic sensitivity of the SO peak parameters to capping of the CdSe core with a ZnS (or CdS) shell [40] introduces further ambiguity in understanding of the nature of this mode. Based on similarity of the SO mode parameters for different NC morphologies, as well as existence of similar low-frequency asymmetry for bulk alloys [37]; one may assume it to be induced by the presence of atoms with coordination differing from the rest of (bulk) atoms.…”
