The Influence of Self-Marking With Fluorescent Powders on Adult Bark Beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae)

Abstract: Under laboratory conditions, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann and Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff) adults became self-marked with fluorescent powders upon emergence from treated logs. The technique provided a reliable procedure for marking adult bark beetles without having to handle them. When the powder remained dry, nearly all of the emerged beetles were marked. However, the percentage of marked beetles decreased dramatically following simulated rain events. Once marked, the mark remains intact on beetles stored… Show more

“…Each simulated mill yard consisted of nine Scotch pine logs infested with T. piniperda and 42 uninfested red pine, Pinus resinosa Ait., logs. Fluorescent pigments appear to have no negative effect on emergence, flight initiation, or semiochemical perception of bark beetle species that have been tested (Cook and Hain 1992). The uninfested red pine logs (13.1 f 0.1 cm, mean f SE, diameter at base) were obtained from a 50year-old red pine plantation near Newaygo, Newaygo County, Michigan.…”

“…Although some studies have reported no significant effects of marking on some aspects of behaviour (Schmitz 1980;Linton et al 1987;Naranjo 1990;Salom and McLean 1990;Cook and Hain 1992), Messing et al (1993) found a significant difference in recapture rates of marked parasitoid wasps, with more unmarked individuals caught with sticky traps. This decrease in recapture rate may be due to decreased survivorship before dispersal (Messing et al 1993) or to differential behaviour related to the marking as discussed earlier.…”

“…We observed the beetles flying in the outdoor cage; the powder did not appear to inhibit flight activity or otherwise alter their behavior. Studies on the influence of marking methods for chrysomelids and other beetles have found no effects of this powder on flight ability, chemosensitivity, or survivorship for at least 10 days after marking (Naranjo 1990;Cook and Hain 1992).…”
