The influence of selenium and selenoproteins on immune responses of poultry and pigs

Abstract: A B S T R A C TSelenium is an essential nutrient for poultry and pigs, and is important for a number of physiological processes including regulation and function of the immune system. Through its incorporation into selenoproteins, Se is involved in the regulation of oxidative stress, redox mechanisms, and other crucial cellular processes involved in innate and adaptive immune response. This review provides current knowledge on the mechanisms by which selenium can modulate the resilience to infectious diseases, … Show more

“…Selenium metabolism has been discussed in the literature with specific regard to the role of Se within the central nervous system [ 174 ]. There are also reviews on the action of Se on productive characteristics, antioxidative status, immune responses and nutrient utilization of poultry [ 175 , 176 ]. Members of this selenoproteome take part in diverse biological pathways and processes in chicken, such as in maintenance of the redox balance; interactions with metals and transport of Se.…”

“…It is also important for a number of physiological processes including regulation and function of the immune system through its incorporation into selenoproteins. Also, Se is involved in the regulation of oxidative stress, redox mechanisms, and other crucial cellular processes involved in innate and adaptive immune response (Dalgaard et al, 2018). Body weight gain, feed conversion efficiency and antioxidant capacity of growing rabbits were improved when offered supplementary dietary Se at a level of 0.24 mg Se/kg Dry Matter (DM) (Zhang et al, 2011).…”

“…Up to now, the results of these studies were not considered successful, despite the fact that several substances can inhibit tissue enzymes (for example, citrates and acetates -phosphofructokinase) [44]. To prevent the emergence and development of nutritional myopathies, investigations have been continued in the field of studying an effect of different doses of selenium and vitamin E with regard to sources of these substances, dura-tion of feeding period, feed composition and other factors [1,12,40,43,45,46].…”
