“…However, the Co-coating thickness has a strong influence on the thickness of the (Cr,Fe) 2 O 3 and (Co,Fe) 3 O 4 layers formed during the initial oxidation phase and, thus, also a strong influence on the ASR of the material at 650°C. It has previously been speculated that Fe is able to dissolve into the metallic Cocoating, and that this Fe-Co alloy is oxidized into (Co,Fe) 3 O 4 [22,29,39]. The findings in this study, however, do not support that theory.…”

“…5) was never formed, and instead, only a protective Cr-rich (Cr,Fe) 2 O 3 scale was formed initially, as must have been the case for the pre-oxidized material. These results can also be compared to a similar study by Macauley et al [39] on Co-coated SS441 exposed at a substantially higher temperature (800°C) in air. Those authors also reported a beneficial effect of pre-oxidizing the steel before coating it with metallic Co (the formation of a (Co,Fe) 3 O 4 layer was prevented, and thinner Cr 2 O 3 scales were formed).…”

“…The coatings were applied as metals, which presumably become oxidized during the first hours of high-temperature air exposure. A previous study 33 has shown that in single atmosphere air at 800 • C, after 10 hours, Co is fully oxidized to Co 3 O 4 and this oxide remains stable up to at least 100 hours. The Co presence on the LSM cathode surface could be related to a migration/diffusion process from the coating through the electrode, a volatilization/condensation process, or to some combination thereof.…”
