The influence of POSS type on the properties of PLA

Abstract: In this study, the effects of reactive and non‐reactive poly(hedral oligomeric silsesquoxane) (POSS) type and their loading level on the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of PLA composites were investigated for the first time in the literature. A decrease in the melt viscosity of PLA was obtained from the vertical force measurements in the presence of POSS particles except for high O‐POSS loading level. This played an important role for power consumption during micro‐compounding process. The mec… Show more

“…The load cell is 10 kN in range and measures the vertical force exerted by the barrel opposing the pushing forces imposed by the screws at the bottom while the polymer melt is pumped through the recirculation channel or die. For a given polymer, if the screw speed and the barrel temperature are fixed, then the vertical force can be used as a representation of the melt viscosity of the polymer . In this study, the vertical force measurement was conducted to compare the melt viscosity of the composites as a function of composition.…”

“…Additionally, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) with their inorganic nanometer‐size cage‐like hybrid structure has attracted great interest in the last few decades as an additive for many polymeric nanocomposites 27–29 . This material is an important class inorganic/organic hybrid molecule having an empirical formula of (RSiO 1.5 ) n ( n is generally 6, 8, and 12) that has an inorganic SiO 3D cage‐like skeleton and ‘ n ” organic side groups linked to this skeleton 30–34 . These side groups (R) which control the reactivity, solubility, and compatibility between polymers and POSS are hydrogen or any aryl, arylene, alkyl, and alkylene group 35,36 .…”
