Abstract:Serum y-globulin levels have been determined by paper electrophoresis in 54 patients with cirrhosis of the liver before and after establishment of a portocaval shunt. As a control group 23 patients operated on for cancer of the lung were studied in the same way. A significant average increase from 18.6 to 23.0 g/l in the cirrhotics was found, whereas no increase in the control group was observed. Serum immunoglobulins and antibodies to E. coli 0 group antigens were studied in 31 patients with cirrhosis and a p… Show more
“…More specifically an increase in the immune response against viral antigens has been demonstrated in schizophrenia [63,64] as well as in chronic liver disease [65]. Further, an increase in the immune response against E. coli antigens was observed in schizophrenic patients [66] as well as in cirrhotic patients with surgical portacaval shunts [65,67]. The observed increase in the incidence of autoimmune reactions in schizophrenic patients was suggested to be of pathogenic significance in some cases of schizophrenia [68,69].…”
The present review evaluates the hypothesis that a dysfunction of the liver, caused by portacaval bypass of a normal liver, is a predisposing factor in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. In support of this hypothesis was observed a more than coincidental correlation of deviant biological findings in schizophrenia and portacaval shunting. Deviations were observed in the expression of neurotransmitters and neuroreceptors, metabolic parameters, immune response and stress parameters as well as signs of neurotoxicity with cerebral atrophy. Doppler sonographic analysis of the portal venous system should enable a noninvasive test of the hypothesis.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
