“…This developmental period is critical to examine the effects of PED on depressive symptoms and IL‐6 through negative CSs in the context of the hopelessness theory of depression (Abramson et al, 1989) because there is evidence that exposure to discrimination during this period better predicts adult inflammation than does concurrent adult discrimination (Simons et al, 2019; Tobin et al, 2022). Additionally, the adolescent developmental stage is partially characterized by socialization and identification with peer groups, which can have a strong influence on the onset and maintenance of depressive symptoms (Stafford et al, 2020).
