The influence of molar mass on rheological and dilute solution properties of poly(butylene succinate)

Abstract: The fundamental rheological properties of a wide molar mass Mw range of poly(butylene succinate)s (PBSs) are investigated. For entangled samples and a reference temperature of 140°C, the shear viscosity is described by the Carreau–Yasuda model. The plateau modulus is estimated at 1.5 × 105 Pa, the average activation energy of PBS melt is trueE¯a = 45.02 ± 3.09 kJ mol −1, and the critical molar mass for entanglement Mc is found to be 16,000 g mol−1 (PS equivalent). The dilute solution properties of PBS are als… Show more

“…Garin et al . looked at the kinetics of poly(butylene succinate) synthesis with and without catalyst . Hu reported the polycondensation kinetics of aliphatic‐aromatic copolyesters comprising succinic acid, terephthalic acid, and 1,4‐butanediol catalyzed by titanium butoxide .…”

“…M c indicates chain entanglement and is about twice as large as the molecular weight between entanglements ( M e ) ( M c ≈ 2 M e ) . It is about 5 kDa in similar polyesters (compare to M n ) . Essentially, M c is the molecular weight at which the viscosity of the polymer melt starts increasing more rapidly with increasing molecular weight, due to the presence of entanglements .…”

“…The obtained molar masses can be considered low for applications that require good mechanical properties, but seem adequate for manufacture of microparticles intended for cosmetic applications and are higher than molar masses reported in other studies and obtained at more severe reaction conditions . For the sake of comparison, Chen et al studied the synthesis of several biomass polymers; for the specific case of PBS, the reaction was performed with the catalyst TTP (titanium tetraisopropoxide) and led to PBS resins with Mn of 3000 Da after 20 h of reaction at 220 °C.…”
