Students have become more concerned about their university selection and are more demanding of the universities they chose. In this highly competitive environment, universities need to understand these expectations. This study examines how undergraduate students perceived the service quality in their higher education institution. To answer that question, a questionnaire was developed and was distributed amongst tourism and hospitality students in Thailand. A variety of statistical techniques was used to analyze the 208 eligible responses. The results revealed that year of study is a significant factor on students reported levels of service quality, whereas gender and nationality were not. This study emphasizes the need to consider the student’s year of study (e.g., age) when policymakers and educators evaluate students’ needs in undergraduate tourism education. The article concludes by presenting implications for educators, policymakers, and education researchers.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the evolution of Total Quality Management (TQM) in terms of barriers, customers and accreditation in higher education (HE) over the last three decades (1991–2020) using literature review to establish the current state.Design/methodology/approachA total of 137 articles across 55 journals were consolidated for this review specifically focused on TQM (barriers, customers and accreditation) in HE. The investigations were carried out to identify the chronological growth of articles, research streams and methodologies. The articles were classified based on four research approaches and three research streams which have been reviewed in detail.FindingsConsidering the rapid growth in the HE sector and the concerns over reduction in quality of education especially in developing countries, the importance of TQM in HE is immense. The findings include identification of the barriers to successful TQM implementation, the need for alignment of TQM objectives of higher educational institutions (HEIs) and identified target customer(s) with the selected model/framework and the impact of accreditation/certification in the attainment of TQM.Originality/valueThis study which tries to bring a perspective to the main trends in TQM application to HE with respect to barriers, customers and accreditation over the last three decades is expected to add to the body of knowledge in this area and help future researchers to focus on the relevant areas identified in this paper.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a Knowledge Management (KM) model in order to investigate and monitor the performance of HEIs in Oman. In this paper, a KM model of five KM components based on the relative performance factor and a critical set of 22 indicators from an original set of 180 indicators are proposed and outlined; in terms of the use of the KM categories and selected indicators, the performance of 30 Higher Education Institutions was measured and studied. In this paper, the literature and related approaches were studied. A KM model which is based on the five main components of KM, relative performance factor, indicators, weights, and data collection was proposed. Three types of data were collected from institutions to calculate the indicators/the relative performance factor, and several tests were carried out. In addition, the conceptualisation and operationalisation processes of the model are discussed. The proposed KM model was implemented in all the private institutions and the obtained results show the applicability and accuracy of the technique, and the proposed technique was compared with the classical approach. The results of the proposed approach have been tested and analysed comprehensively: these results of the statistical tests of the aforementioned proposed approach show a high level of accuracy of the results, and that the results of institutions differ significantly one from another, and also that the differences between institutions are not due to any random factor. The discussion of the numerical results shows that the performance of HEIs was placed in three categories. The findings of the paper highlight the performance of HEIs and they give significant evidence to individual HEIs and to the stakeholders so as to allow them to act on the findings and distinguish between them in terms of the actual performance.
