The influence of hidden researcher decisions in applied microeconomics

Abstract: Researchers make hundreds of decisions about data collection, preparation, and analysis in their research. We use a many-analysts approach to measure the extent and impact of these decisions. Two published causal empirical results are replicated by seven replicators each. We find large differences in data preparation and analysis decisions, many of which would not likely be reported in a publication. “…At the same time and similar to other same data and hypothesis studies, we found that removing publication and other biasing incentives still leaves us confronted with a universe of decisions and outcomes. Thus, our findings suggest that other recommendations from these studies such as greater standardization of data preparation, model averaging, more replications and usage of multiverse simulations will not necessarily reduce uncertainty given a hidden universe of choices that cannot be easily simulated (16,18,21,26).
