Objective:This study aimed to investigate prescription patterns for older people in nursing homes of Tehran. Methods:In this cross-sectional study, the data of 170 older people, sampled random cluster gathering method, using medical records, questionnaires and interview with nurses and physicians. Results:The mean average age of the sample was 79.75. 64.7% of them were female. 62.4% received more than 5 types of medicines. The mean number of medicines was 7.55 with the ranging of 1-19 drugs. The most medicine forms used by older people were: tablets 98.2%, injection medicines 20.6 %, drops 13.5%, syrup 8.8%, sprays 6.5%, ointments and suppositories 2.9%. There was not a signi cant relationship between participating in geriatric educational course And the mean numbers of the prescribed medications (P>0.05)., as well as between covering by health insurance specialty in medicine and the mean of the numbers of mediations (P>0.05). There was a signi cant relationship between having insurance and the mean number of prescribed medicine (P<0.05). Conclusion:Developing educational programs on geriatric pharmacology general practitioners and more supervision on residential care homes practices may have affects on prescription pattern.

RESUMENLa evaluación de la red de apoyo social constituye una herramienta primordial para la valoración integral de los adultos mayores y el diseño de intervenciones que contemplen sus propios recursos y necesidades. Este trabajo efectúa un análisis crítico de algunas certezas y dudas acerca de la red durante la vejez. En primer lugar, se exponen los fundamentos del modelo teórico del apoyo social y se define el concepto de red de apoyo. Luego, se analizan los cambios que se producen en ella y su impacto sobre el bienestar en la vejez. Se concluye la amplia variabilidad en la composición y funcionalidad de las redes en la vejez evidenciando que esta última no determina la insuficiencia del apoyo social de un modo inexorable. Finalmente, a fin de enriquecer el conocimiento de esta etapa de la vida y deconstruir presupuestos fundados en un paradigma deficitario, se propone: a) evaluar las redes de manera conjunta con la persona de edad y considerar su punto de vista subjetivo acerca de la satisfacción con la misma y b) priorizar la investigación de redes de diferentes niveles de suficiencia y funcionalidad, de sus modificaciones y de los motivos por los cuáles éstas se han generado. ASSESSMENT CONTRIBUTIONS ABSTRACTThe social network assessment is an important strategy in old adult's whole evaluation and to promote interventions considering their resources and needs. This paper analyses some certainties and doubts about elderly people's social network. In the first place, the social network theoretical model bases are presented and the social support network is defined. Second, the network changes and its impact on old adult's well-being is analyzed. The social network variability shows that the insufficient support is not inexorably determined by the age. Finally, to increase the knowledge about the elderly and to deconstruct presuppositions based on a paradigm of deficits, the following is proposed: a) to evaluate the social network together with old adults and to consider their subjective perception about social support satisfaction, and b) to prioritize the research on different levels of sufficiency and functionality in social networks, its changes and the reasons why this may occur.
