The influence of exposure to Toxoplasma Gondii on host lipid metabolism

Abstract: Background: Mounting evidence suggested a complex correlation between host lipid metabolism and Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection. However, the inherent association between T. gondii infection and host lipid state remains elusive either in mice or in human hosts. Methods: Through a study in a sample of 1045 healthy participants from eastern China, we determined the association of T. gondii infection and host lipid levels using serological methods. We then examined the host lipid levels in C57BL/6 J mice … Show more

“…Most clinical studies suggest that up to 10% of patients suffering from COVID-19 suffer from diarrhoea ( Chen et al, 2020c ; Guan et al, 2020 ; Huang et al, 2020 ; Jin et al, 2020 ; Kim et al, 2020 ; Li et al, 2020b ; Liu et al, 2020 ; Xu et al, 2020b ; Zhang et al, 2020b ), although some studies reported higher rates, between 15% and 34% ( Chen et al, 2020b ; Pan et al, 2020 ; Wang et al, 2020a ; Zhao et al, 2020 ). One study ( Lei et al, 2020 ) comparing the clinical features of patients with COVID-19 in Wuhan and outside Wuhan (Guangzhou, China) reported a greater proportion of diarrhoea in the subsample of patients outside Wuhan (25% vs. 2%).…”

“…Xu et al (19) accredited these changes to the inability of T. gondii to produce cholesterol on its own; thus, it needs the host endocytosed low-density lipoprotein for cholesterol production; a key component of the parasitophorous vacuoles, because of increased absorption, T. gondii infection decreases blood cholesterol concentration in both infected humans and animals (19,30,31). Furthermore, gender differences in T. gondii infection were further highlighted in Sagud et al (21) work that revealed higher blood concentrations of total cholesterol levels and lowdensity lipoprotein in T. gondii infected males.…”

“…In T. gondii , lipid metabolism holds profound significance, pivotal to its survival and pathogenicity 41 . The parasite's reliance on lipid synthesis extends beyond conventional roles as structural components to encompass multifaceted functions crucial for its life cycle within the host 42 . In 2017, Chasen et al.…”
