Introduction: Cervical pain affects most people at some stage, especially middle-aged. It is one of the symptoms of cervical spine dysfunction. The prevalence of neck pain varies and depends on the population studied. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of cervical spine dysfunction among dentistry students from a medical university. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on a group of 112 randomly chosen, generally healthy students (73 women and 39 men) of the faculty of medicine, division of dentistry at a medical university, aged 20-32, average 22.88 ± 2.7. The survey was based on a questionnaire about possible symptoms and disorders of the cervical spine in the 6 preceeding months. A bodychart was used to visualize ailments in relation to the scheme of human body, and a Graded Chronic Pain Scale was applied to assess levels of pain. Additionally, the Perceived Stress Scale and Neck Disability Index were evaluated. Results: With respect to the questionnaire about possible symptoms of cervical spine disorders in the 6 preceeding months, 22.32% of students declared headaches 2-3 times a week, and 45.53% 2-3 times a month. 42.85% of the participants reported difficulties with concentration, 56.25% showed attention issues, and 25% had problems with memory. Moreover, 9.82% of the subjects suffered from depression, and 27.67% declared mood disorders. The bodychart revealed the occurrence of pain within the cervical spine in 47.32% of the respondents. 31.25% of students declared discomfort in the suboccipital area. In 57.14% of people, low intensity of chronic pain without functional disorders was noted. A moderate level of stress was reported in 58.03% of students. Mild cervical spine disorders were found in 53.57% of cases. Conclusion: The relatively high prevalence of symptoms of the cervical spine dysfunction, chronic pain, stress, and neck disability among young people may indicate that numerous spinal disorders identified in dentists result not only from their profession, in which spine is significantly overloaded, but also individual predispositions including biopsychosocial profile and the changing lifestyle habits of young people.

Background and purposeTemporomandibular disorders (TMD) are among the most frequent pathologies of the stomatognathic system. One problem often associated with TMD is the psychoemotional status. The aim of study was to evaluate the psychoemotional status of young adults with pain symptoms associated with TMD.Material and methodsWe analyzed the data of 260 volunteers. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) form was used to diagnose TMD. The relationships between TMD/RDC clinical diagnoses and psychoemotional status, as described by the Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS‐10), were analyzed. We divide the group into four on the basis of RDC/TMD Axis I diagnosis. Group 0 included 30 students lacking TMD symptoms. Group I consisted of 30 people with myofascial pain (group IA in RDC/TMD). Group II contained 23 people with disk displacement with reduction (group IIA in RDC/TMD). Group III contained ten people (Group III diagnosis, often associated with pain).ResultsWe did not find statistically significant differences between the study groups. In subjects with pain (Groups I and III), we found the mean value on the BDI and PSS‐10 scales to be higher than among the pain‐free subjects (Groups 0 and II).ConclusionIn young adults with TMD accompanied by pain, psychoemotional status should also be evaluated.

To search the salivary factors that objectively indicate an pain in myalgia patients with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and determine the possibility of the factors as pain-biomarkers. Methods: Participants consisted of pain-free 15 persons (male 7, female 8, mean age±standard deviation (SD); 26.8±16.04 years) and 45 myalgia patients with TMD (male 21, female 24, mean age±SD; 27.98±13.01 years). They were divided into a pain-free group (numerical rating scale [NRS] score 0), a mild pain group (NRS 1-4), a moderate pain group (NRS 5-6), and a severe pain group (NRS 7-10) and members of all groups were age, sex matched. Interleukin-8 (IL-8) and matrix metalloprotease 9 (MMP-9) were selected as pain biomarkers, by searching the Gene Expression Omnibus database and analyzing pain-related genes. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to measure the concentration of IL-8 and MMP-9 in the patients' saliva. Results: IL-8 and MMP-9 levels were statistically significantly higher in pain groups than in the pain-free group. Greater differences were observed in patients with acute pain (with painful duration under 3 months) than in the control group and in female patients than in male. Conclusions: Salivary IL-8 and MMP-9 may play a role as biomarkers of myalgia in patients with TMD.
