The Influence of Dissolved Oxygen on Pseudomonas AM1 Grown on Methanol in Continuous Culture

Abstract: SUMMARYMethanol-limited cultures of Pseudomonas AM I were grown in chemostats (D, 0.1 h.-l; methanol 10 g./l.) at dissolved oxygen tensions between I and 690 mm. Hg. Decreasing the dissolved oxygen tension from I I O to 2 8 5 mm. Hg did not affect either respiration or carbon balance, but lowering it further caused a progressive increase in respiration which was maximal at 3 mm. Hg (the lowest dissolved oxygen tension at which a steady state could be maintained at the fixed dilution rate). Increasing the disso… Show more

“…The effect of oxygen tension on methylotrophic bacteria was examined by Dalton's g r o~p~' , '~ and Maclennan et a1. 20. In M. capsulatus (Bath), Dalton et al noted that a high oxygen tension above a pOz of 0.1 atm inhibited nitrogen assimilation and reduced the growth rate under nitrate-or ammonium-limiting conditions.…”

“…M extorquens AM1 and M organophilum DSM 760 were grown on the minimal medium (medium A) of MacLennan et al (31) or the minimal medium described previously (12), containing 0.5% (vol/vol) methanol, 0.2% (wt/vol) methylamine hydrochloride, or 0.2% (wt/vol) succinate. When required, filter-sterilized PQQ (Methoxatin; Fluka) was added to 1 ,uM.…”
