The influence of dissection on clinical anatomical knowledge for surgical needs

Abstract: Purpose Due to the ongoing discussion of the usefulness of dissection on human bodies in medical curricula, we investigated the influence of anatomical knowledge collected in the dissection course and requested for modules of visceral surgery. Methods Students attending the dissection course of topographic anatomy had to answer a questionnaire of 22 questions with focus on anatomical knowledge required for visceral surgical modules. Failure was defined as … Show more

“…Addressing this gap in technical skills requires a multifaceted approach: indeed, in these last years, 3D virtual technologies deeply contributed to anatomical education, even if the most attention should be payed to direct dissection in order to improve and refine the future physician's knowledge by the anatomical teaching "gold standard" [32][33][34][35]. Anatomy dissection courses tailored to surgical trainees, along with other supplementary material, remain a critical step in improving their understanding of the variability of human morphology [36,37].…”

“…It should be noted that dissection and training using cadaveric material remains the gold standard in medicine. According to Feig G. (2022), autopsies support and improve the necessary knowledge for surgical modules [ 28 ]. Cadaveric dissection brings about the skills, courage, and the ability to confidently work on the human body without any fear, for future practice.…”

“…Anatomy is an essential fundamental science for medical education and medical practices. The teaching of anatomy has evolved over decades; however, cadaveric dissection remains the gold standard and the most effective modality for the delivery of anatomy [1]. The delivery of anatomy in medical education is a difficult task worldwide, especially for low and middle-income countries (LMIC), including Rwanda.…”
