Multicultural teenagers in South Korea often suffer from psychological difficulties, such as social withdrawal and depression, due to communication difficulties, discrimination, and economic constraints. These emotional problems negatively affect career decision-making. However, little is known about the basic mechanism through which multicultural adolescents’ internalizing problems affect their career decisions. This study expanded prior research by examining the sequential mediating effect of depression and achievement motivation in the relationship between social withdrawal and career decision-making and the moderated mediation effect of parental support in the causal pathway from social withdrawal to career decision-making via depression and achievement motivation. This study used panel data from the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS), a national survey. The results showed a sequential mediating effect of depression and achievement motivation, a moderating effect, and a moderating mediating effect of parental support. The results of this study imply that parental support is an essential factor that helps multicultural adolescents improve their career decision-making by alleviating depression and enhancing achievement motivation.

Longitudinal Mediating Effect of Self-esteem in the Bidirectional Relationship between School Life Adaptation and Life Satisfaction of Multicultural Children

Objectives: This study sought to verify bidirectionality by examining a bidirectional relationship of school life adaptation and life satisfaction with self-esteem as a mediating variable over time.Methods: Based on data from 2,245 elementary school students extracted from Year 1 (2019), Year 2 (2020), and Year 3 (2021) of the Multicultural Youth Panel Survey (MAPS 2nd), this adopted structural equation modeling method using the autoregressive cross-lagged modeling.Results: The study derived the following results. First, adaptation to school life at a previous point affected self-esteem at a later point, self-esteem at a previous point affected life satisfaction at a later point. In other words, school life adaptation in 4th grade had a positive effect on life satisfaction in 6th grade through selfesteem at 5th grade. Second, life satisfaction at a previous point affected self-esteem at a later point. Selfesteem at an earlier point had an effect on school life adaptation at a later point. That is, life satisfaction in 4th grade had a positive effect on school life adaptation in 6th grade through self-esteem at 5th grade.Conclusion: This study found a bidirectional relationship of school life adaptation and life satisfaction with self-esteem as a mediating variable over time.

IntroductionPatterns of biethnic adolescents' perceived biethnic acceptance across families, peers, and school contexts were examined during the transition from elementary to middle school in South Korea. We also examined how the transition patterns were related to their psychological outcomes during this period.MethodsUtilizing 2‐wave data (2017 and 2019) from the Panel Survey of Korean Multicultural Youth Adjustment, a latent transition analysis was conducted. Participants were biethnic adolescents who were in 5th or 6th grade at Wave 1 (N = 245; 51.02% female; Mage = 11.38). Their fathers were Korean, and mothers were immigrants from neighboring countries. Familial ethnic socialization, peer discrimination, and school multicultural climate scores were used as indicators of biethnic acceptance. Outcomes of self‐esteem, depression, and biethnic affirmation were also examined.ResultsLatent profile and transition analyses yielded two groups (i.e., high acceptance and low acceptance) at each wave and four transition patterns (i.e., high‐high, low‐high, low‐low, and high‐low). Compared to high‐high group, which was the most prevalent group, low‐low and high‐low groups reported lower self‐esteem and ethnic affirmation, and greater depression at Wave 3.ConclusionsWhile for the majority of participants, their daily settings continued to be high in biethnic acceptance across the transition period, most at risk were those who perceived a decrease in biethnic acceptance in their daily settings. Results shed light on the need for support to maintain the context of high biethnic acceptance surrounding biethnic adolescents for their psychological well‐being in school transitions.
