The study explains the impact of digital transformation and environmental sustainability on the demographic dividend. Over the last few decades, remarkable demographic changes are founded in South Asian countries that provide a “window of opportunity” and cause sustainable development by promoting the working-age population. We have used Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) to investigate the dynamic linkages between variables and estimate long-run and short-run results by applying different techniques. Data of all concerned variables are taken from 1972 to 2020 across all South Asian countries. The study employs two models to determine the relationship among variables. In the first model, long-run results show that mobile cellular subscriptions, internet users, urbanization growth, and trade are positively related to population ages (15-64) except for greenhouse gas emissions, governance index, and human capital index. In the second model, mobile cellular subscriptions, internet users, greenhouse gas emissions, urbanization growth, human capital index, and trade are positively related to secondary school enrollment except for the governance index. This study suggests that South Asian countries focus not only on the use of ICT but also promote other digitalization indicators for digital technology developments through investment. Further, policymakers may introduce policies to revamp the education system and create new opportunities to fulfill the labor market demand.

The urgency of the research lies in the possibility of providing educational services even in the crisis conditions of modern times, caused by geopolitical problems and the spread of the global coronavirus pandemic. The activities of Open Universities in the states of the European Union are characterized by openness and the possibility of providing complex educational programs according to modern pedagogical practice. The importance of Open Universities’ activities is underpinned by the use of modern pedagogical methods, namely: distance education and interactive classes. The issue of applying the European education system of Open Universities is crucial to the possibility of improving the population’s general educational level and contributing to the enhancement of the population’s qualifications in EU states. The purpose of the academic paper is to study the principles of activity and aspects of the development of Open Universities in the states of the European Union. The objectives of the research are to analyse the functioning of Open Universities, define the educational program and outline the prospects for further development. The object of the research is the factors of activity and development of open universities in the European Union’s states based on modern digital technologies. By using the methods of scientific research, both exploratory and analytical ones, an assessment of the activities of Open Universities in European countries was carried out. The research methodology consists in the analysis of theoretical and methodological approaches to the Open University as an educational institution and conducting a study of the prospects for the development of Open Universities in the countries of the European Union. The results obtained can be used in practical training of students for their subsequent admission to higher educational institutions and improving the process of developing a complex of educational programs in Open Universities. The academic paper examines the principles and factors of the development of Open Universities in the countries of the European Union.

Purpose The paper aims to empirically examine the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and digitalization on employment opportunities in selected 70 developing economies across the world over the period of 2001–2019. The same empirical investigations are also carried out on two groups of these developing countries created on the basis of the levels of FDI inflows and digitalization. Design/methodology/approach The study uses various panel unit root tests followed by the estimations of the generalized method of moments in the dynamic panel framework, using secondary data collected from the World Bank (2020), International Labour Organization (2020) and International Telecommunication Union (2020). Findings Empirical findings reveal that both FDI inflows and digitalization have positive effects on employment; however, the extent of the impact of digitalization is greater than that of FDI inflows in developing economies, mostly in countries with relatively low FDI inflows and low digitalization. Originality/value Conventionally, FDI inflows accelerate economic growth and thus improve the labour market in host countries. However, FDI inflows into developing countries with low-skilled labours may limit job creation, particularly during the process of digitalization. This study shows that despite a much moderate impact of FDI inflows, digital transformation supports a higher employment in developing economies with low level of FDI inflows and digitalization.
