The influence of D-chiro-inositol and D-myo-inositol in pregnant women with glucose intolerance

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of the present study was to demonstrate that the use of inositol and folic acid from the first trimester of pregnancy, counteracts the onset of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in women at risk, preserving the infants from macrosomia, hypoglycemia and preterm delivery. The authors collected data from the pregnant women at the laboratory (Unit of Cytogenic and Molecular Genetics), from January 2014 to April 2016, all with first trimester fasting plasma glucose (FPG) >92 mg/dl. A total of 40… Show more

“…As already mentioned, Celentano et al recently demonstrated the greatest benefit of Myo (4000 mg) compared with DCI alone (500 mg) and Myo/DCI association (1100 mg/27.6 mg) in the prevention of GDM in high‐risk pregnant women. These results, at odds with the previous study by Dell'Edera et al, could be due to either the use of inadequate doses of Myo/DCI or to late intervention …”

“…In the first group, the best results were obtained for the improvement of the glucose profile, total cholesterol, LDL, and TG [59]. This was recently confirmed by Dell’ Edera et al [60] administering all pregnant women in the first trimester of pregnancy with fasting plasma glucose >92 mg/dL a supplement consisting of DCI 250 mg, MI 1.75 g, zinc 12.5 mg, methylsulfonylmethane 10 mg, and 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid 400 μg daily, compared to the group received only folic acid 400 μg. More than 3-fold lower exposure of treated women to gestational diabetes, fetal macrosomia was found, but no differences in preterm delivery rate and neonatal hypoglycaemia [60].…”

“…A recent study conducted by Dell’Edera at al [ 40 ]. demonstrated that the supplementation with D-chiro-inositol and D-myo-inositol allows a better control of maternal glycemia resulting in a lower incidence of GDM ( P = 0.0028) and more favorable perinatal outcomes referring to the risk of macrosomia ( P = 0.0099).…”
