Since kidney glucosaminoglycans have been shown to be related to the ability of turtles to conserve water, 29 it can be speculated that the increased expression of NDST3 in hibernating black bear kidneys protect the animals during the long period of dehydration during winter sleep. Moreover, since the endothelial glycocalyx on the vascular endothelial cells plays a major role in albuminuria and kidney disease, 30 it could be speculated that upregulation of NDST3 may protect the endothelial glycocalyx in bear kidneys during the anuric hibernation.…”
