The influence of cardiac cholinergic activation on the induction and maintenace of ventricular fibrillation

Abstract: The influence of cardiac cholinergic activation was studied in rats and cats on the induction and maintenance of ventricular fibrillation (VF). Acetylcholine (ACH 2-25 micrograms/kg), in doses which did not cause bradycardia or hypotension, induced appearance of spontaneous VF (duration 2-60 sec.) in 9/20 rats which have a high sympathetic autoregulation and in 3/6 cats only, 20-40 secs after the latter had been given adrenaline. ACh (10-45 micrograms/kg) and methacholine (10-40 micrograms/kg) also significant… Show more

“…It is interesting to note that most of the 12 AEs used to build the anticholinesterase safety profile can be explained by pharmacological activity. Indeed, cholinergic activation might enhance aggressive behaviour, 20 agitation, 21 anal incontinence, 22 cholinergic syndrome, 21 decreased appetite, 23 sudden death 24 and urinary incontinence 25 . The cholinergic pathway may also play a role in the onset of a confusional state, delirium, hallucinations, paranoia and vomiting 26,27 …”

“…It has been suggested by Manoach and his colleges (1,17) that increased adrenergic activity is associated with a tendency towards TVF, as opposed to the cholinergic effect which tends to predispose to SVF.…”
