The Influence of Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC) and Solution pH on Carbon Fiber Dispersion in White Cement Matrix

Abstract: Dispersion of carbon fiber in cement matrix is one of main challenges for fabricating carbon fiber reinforced cement based materials. In this study, the dispersion of carbon fiber was improved by pre-dispersion of carbon fiber in basic aqueous solution using different concentrations of CMC. The relationships of CMC concentration and pH solution toward carbon fiber dispersion in aqueous solution was evaluated by UVvis spectroscopy. In order to understand how carbon fiber is dispersed in cement matrix, morpholog… Show more

“…It is worth noticing that H. Fengyuan and his co-workers (2014) reported an essential use of CMC or CMC derivatives in the construction industry, such as CMC-sulfate on cement paste set-retarding and water-reducing agent [ 91 ]. Moreover, CMC is used as a dispersing agent in the white cement matrix while it improves the dispersion of carbon fiber in the cement matrix [ 92 ]. Cosmetic products are pretty common, and their demand has increased daily in human life for their esthetic and therapeutic effects on the skin.…”

“…Moreover, applications of CMC have also been proposed in various fields such as in the paper industry to provide strengthening property, good printability or ink retention, color stability, fire retardancy features of CMC [84][85][86][87]; in paper or wood adhesives for a better adhesion property [88,89]; and in Si anodic electrodes for their potential binding capacity and cyclic performance [90]. Additionally, CMC has been used in the construction industry [91,92], cosmetics [93], dental profession [94], liquid detergent [95], fertilizer industry [96,97], oil industry [98,99], etc.…”

“…CMC can increase carbon fiber dispersion because it has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic sides as a dispersant. Concerning carbon fiber dispersion, the effects of CMC concentration and solution pH were investigated [18].…”

“…The role of the binder within the electrode is very diverse: the dissolved binder defines the flow behavior of the slurry, stabilizes the suspension and, once dried, provides mechanical strength to the electrode, which ultimately affects the cycle life of the LIC [17,18]. In addition, adsorbing binders such as CMC can act as dispersing agents and provide steric stabilization to the slurry [19,20]. When CMC is used as a binder, a second polymer is needed to provide adhesion to the current collector and often styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is used for this purpose [21].…”
