The influence of atmospheric circulation on the water level on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea

Abstract: The research focused on the relationships between atmospheric circulation patterns and the water level on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Monthly values of water levels were used, recorded between 1961 and 2010 in Wismar, Warnemünde, Sassnitz,Świnoujście, Kołobrzeg, Ustka and Władysławowo. To establish and examine the relationships between the water levels (dependent variable) and the number of days of atmospheric circulation patterns (independent variable), the correlation and regression analysis were c… Show more

“…Sea level measurements at tide gauges provided the empirical basis for the study. Many long records of tide gauge observations exist from the Baltic Sea, some (Stockholm, Saint Petersburg andŚwinoujście) stretching back to the 1770s-1810s (Girjatowicz et al, 2016). However, older parts of the series are hardly usable due to gaps and uneven spatial coverage.…”

“…Weather conditions are of the greatest importance for slip zone creation. Extreme weather conditions in the Baltic Sea are observed increasingly often; therefore, the erosive action can be expected to worsen [53][54][55][56][57][58][59]. The geological structure of the area is characterised by very low permeability.…”

“…Intense erosion has occurred on the open coastline of the southern Baltic in the past century. Research has linked these conditions to the size of storms that occur in the Baltic Sea and the rising water level that accompanies these hazardous conditions [54][55][56][57].…”

“…Recently, the fluctuation of sea condition with regards to increase in sea level, recurrence of water surge and tropical violent winds could be the cause for excessive salt in freshwater which impact the fisheries sectors around the world [16]. Changes in hydrology and meteorology in the study can be a major impact on the salinity levels.…”
