The influence of an extreme drought event in the fish community of a southern Europe temperate estuary

Abstract: Nevertheless, from the management point of view, it could be stated that although some variations occurred due to environmental stress, the main core of the Mondego Estuary fish community remained relatively unchanged.

“…In addition, this approach confirms the physiological and ionoregulatory mechanisms reported for fish found in estuarine regions (Elliott & Dewailly, 1995;Prodócimo & Freire, 2001;Garcia et al, 2003aGarcia et al, , 2003bGarcia et al, , 2004Burns et al, 2006;Freire & Prodócimo, 2007;Martinho et al, 2007;Da Rocha et al, 2009). Our findings also confirm results from earlier studies regarding the environments used by these fish species for feeding, reproduction and nursery grounds (Chao et al, 1985;Vieira & Castello, 1996;Garcia et al, 2003aGarcia et al, , 2003bGarcia et al, , 2004Burns et al, 2006).…”

“…All fish caught were identified, measured (total length, with 1 mm precision) and weighted (wet weight e WW, with 0.001 g precision). A detailed description of the community structure is provided in Martinho et al (2007b). Due to the amount of data required for the production estimates, only the most abundant fish species, along the surveyed period, were used in the present study, i.e.…”

“…Due to the amount of data required for the production estimates, only the most abundant fish species, along the surveyed period, were used in the present study, i.e. the marine juveniles using the estuary as nursery grounds e nursery species, Dicentrarchus labrax, Platichthys flesus, Solea solea and the residents Pomatoschistus minutus and Pomatoschistus microps, which live in the estuary throughout their life cycle (nursery and resident ecological guilds, adapted from Elliott and Dewailly, 1995, and according to Martinho et al, 2007b). In each sampling station, water transparency and depth were registered, and dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH and salinity were measured from the water collected near the bottom.…”

“…Although C. auratus have previously been recorded in estuaries elsewhere around the world (Maes et al 1998;Martinho et al 2007;Henderson and Bird 2010), such records have been typically limited to the upper, oligohaline reaches of these systems and/or have coincided with periods of higher freshwater flows and flushing. The presence of C. auratus in the Vasse Estuary during the austral summer, albeit before the system becomes markedly hypersaline (Lane et al 2011), indicates that this species is capable of surviving in mesohaline environments.…”
