The Influence of Air and Liquid Properties on Airblast Atomization

Abstract: An experimental study of airblast atomization has been conducted using a specially designed atomizer in which the liquid is first spread into a thin sheet and then exposed on both sides to high-velocity air. The first results of this study, reported in reference [1], were confined to the effects of liquid properties, namely, viscosity, surface tension, and density on atomization quality. Since then the experimental data have been extended to include the influence of air properties, notably temperature and pres… Show more

“…' Dobbins, er al. (1962) described the basic theory and optical setup which is used extensively, most recently by Lefebvre and co-workers (e.g ., Rizkalla and Lefebvre, 1975;Lorenzetto and Lefebvre, 1977;Lefebvre, 1983, 1984). Swithenbank, et al (1977) extended the concept of Dobbins to look, not at the distribution of intensity, but at the distribution of energy.…”

“…However, there is an extensive broadening of the droplet diameter range in the (Fig 1) and Rizkalla (1974) (Fig 4). This was expected since the low air density at low pressures causes a reduction in the shear stresses, which results in poor atomization of the fuel liquid sheet.…”

“…Rizkalla and Lefebvre [4] investigated in detail the effects of both air and liquid properties on airblast atomization quality. Rizkalla and Lefebvre drew certain general conclusions concerning the main factors governing the mean drop size.…”
