The industrial emissions trend and the problem of the implementation of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED)

Abstract: The European Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) came into force in 1996. In 2010, the EU Parliament approves the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) that abrogates the IPPC directive. This directive lays down measures designed to regulate emissions arising from the activities of large European industries which recorded a constant decrease from 1990 to 2011. This trend refers especially to SOx/SO2 partly because of some technical changes such as the use of natural gas in the 1990s instead of co… Show more

“…For example, research has evaluated the effectiveness of advanced scrubbing and filtering technologies in reducing PM and other pollutant emissions from biomass pyrolysis [187]. Data from compliance reports highlight the successful implementation of these techniques [188], showcasing reduced emissions and improved air quality outcomes in areas with pyrolysis operations.…”

“…Recommendations to small, medium, and large enterprises Globally, one of the main contributors to emissions of atmospheric pollutants and a significant user of energy is the industrial sector (Conti et al 2015). The pollutants deriving from industrial activities are transported into the urbanized areas.…”

“…TA Luft has since been revised oftentimes, setting stricter limits for air pollutants, leading to its 2014 revision that incorporated the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) into national legislation [110], which aimed to oblige installations to operate according to BAT, creating legally binding conclusions that define new emission limits [111]. This was critical for Germany, since almost 10,000 of the total 45,000 permits issued under the IPPC Directive-a previous version of IED-regarded German installations [112].…”
